Foundation of HEXAL Chemie GmbH by Dr. Andreas and Dr. Thomas Strüngmann: 22 employees and 5 products





 1988
Construction of new administration, laboratory and distribution centre in Holzkirchen. Company relocation with approx. 60 employees






 1990
Construction and commissioning of HEXAL's first own production unit in Holzkirchen

Beginning of internationalisation by founding the first subsidiary in South Africa

Purchase of the pharmaceutical division of Fahlberg-List (Magdeburg, Germany)


 1992-1996
Construction and commissioning of the Salutas plant in Barleben near Magdeburg, today one of the most modern pharmaceutical production plants in Europe

Conversion of the company into an unlisted Aktiengesellschaft (joint stock company)

The most successful launch in the company history. Worldwide turnover of HEXAL Group exceeds 1 billion euros—6,000 employees in over 40 countries





 2004
Start of HEXAL's own synthesis of active pharmaceutical ingredients in Germany, at HEXAL Pharma GmbH






 2005
Fentanyl-HEXAL®
HEXAL AG acquired by Novartis AG. HEXAL will carry on its business activities in Germany as an independent company.

Introduction of Fentanyl-HEXAL – the result of many years' inhouse development work: the pain relief patch, containing an active ingredient, is the first generic version of a medicinal product which has been highly cost-intensive for the healthcare system.

 2006
Sandoz/Hexal laid the foundation-stone for the new company headquarters in Holzkirchen. This symbolic action marked the official start of the massive building project.

 2007, 2008 and 2009
Hexal again pharmaceutical company number one in "Best Place to work" (German edition)
